Last week, we had a surprise visit at SAIIE from our Spring 2015 alum from Christopher Newport University, Josh Kufera!

Josh has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, having graduated with a Double Minor in Mathematics and Leadership Studies. He has also completed a Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford. Then in 2015, he came to Seville to study Spanish Language and International Business with us at SAIIE, as well as participate on our Soccer Program.

We are always happy to hear about what our alumni are getting up to, and to keep up with their latest achievements and career successes. This is especially the case with Josh Kufera!

Josh is now working as a Data Analysis and Visualization Specialist, working in the field of Translational Science and Diagnostics at Personal Genome Diagnostics! We know he will be a valuable asset to the team there, as he was such a role-model student at SAIIE and has proven to be a hard-worker that is more than capable.

SAIIE is very proud to call you its very own alum!

We wish Josh all the luck in the future.

We have already planned several extracurricular activities for you outside your classes, such as a tour of Seville early on, so that you can find your way around the city easily and get to see some of the best sights Seville has to offer. At SAIIE, we recommend as a must La Giralda, and La Plaza de España. We want you to get a feel for the city and an insight into the culture and history of one of Andalucia´s most beautiful cities. In addition to this there is the optional weekend excursions to Portugal and Morocco as well as the trips to the Granada and the Italica and Archaeological museum.

Last but certainly not least here at SAIIE, we want to thank you for choosing to study Spanish at our institute, and we promise you an unforgettable experience!

Yeah, we have smart alumni!

Today, we are sending out particular congratulations to SAIIE Spring 2015 alumna Casey Garr, from High Point University, on how far she has come!
Casey always loved science and started her college career solely as a Biology major. She then realised that she was also passionate about art, and decided to pursue this interest in combination with her major.
Now, she has carved her own way to a career that combines both art and science. She is a trailblazer and has found her own niche. At ASCB 2016 she will be presenting her interesting data about how one can combine art and science into a science outreach program to foster the career development of young scientists. Stop by her poster!

Rowers, put down your oars!

Row with SAIIE, row in Seville, Spain. It sounds nice, doesn´t it?

That´s because it is nice! It´s more than nice. And here is why my dear rowers!

If you are an experienced rower, you will know that the conditions of the river and weather are everything. Seville as a city is adapted to make the perfect rowing grounds to train or compete in the sport, and is actually renowned for having the best rowing training facility within Europe.

If you choose Seville, you are promised an all year-round rowing season thanks to the ideal Southern climate it hosts. What makes Seville an even more prime location for rowers is that its River, Guadalquivir, has an eventual end. It is divided off into two sections, meaning no strong currents, creating the perfect waters for rowing. Together, Seville´s weather and water conditions simulate the exact conditions that are set for the Olympics, assuring optimal rowing speed and performance.

SAIIE’s affiliation with an outstanding local rowing club provides an excellent opportunity to train alongside reputable and accomplished rowers, helping you further develop your skills and reach your athletic potential.

Finally, the one benefit that is guaranteed when placed on a Spanish rowing team is the opportunity to practice and develop your Spanish. With your teammates being Native Spaniards, your interactions with them will always be in Spanish, giving you sense of total immersion into the Hispanic culture as well as Sevillian dialect.

Did Someone Say Faculty-Led?

Since 1984, SAIIE has guided American college students through their study abroad programs in Seville, but now there is something bigger and better that is also on offer. For those who wish to make the most out of their time here in Seville, faculty-led is the way to go!

Our Faculty-Led programs offer you the chance to do a service-learning project with a local school in Seville, immediately immersing you into Hispanic culture and the Sevillian lingo.

What is so great about this program is that we adapt and accommodate the program to suit you and your college. So, we like to involve you in the ins and outs of what you would like to take from this program, and how you would like it to be set up. Each faculty-led is unique in its own respect, made just for you.

With this program, the professor’s role is more than just a teacher. It is a chance to be the student’s mentor. SAIIE staff are there to make this experience even more personalised, giving you the most educated, heartfelt guide of Seville, their home city. They are bilingual, helping develop your Spanish skills, but there to speak English if you need some guidance.

A passion for Seville and everything Spanish is exactly what SAIIE promotes, ready to give you the most exciting, learning experience abroad in Spain!

All the rest like housing, cultural activities, day and weekend trips are taken care of by SAIIE. So, you don’t need to worry about anything other than getting yourself ready for an experience you will never forget!

If you are interested in organising a Faculty-Led program with SAIIE, please contact the Planning and Development director of SAIIE, Sean Chipres, at seanrc@saiie.com

This weekend was all about Morocco, the holy land that is camels, colour and a haggler´s true home!

DAY 1

Morocco begins with a bang. We wake up, eat breakfast and head straight to the Medina of Tetouan, Northern Morocco. Exploring the markets is first on the list, with our tour-guide taking us through the Medina´s narrow streets that are door-to-door stalls selling everything from herbs, spices, Moroccan fabrics to lots and lots of food. A busy, bustling atmosphere is the best way to describe it. Bright colours everywhere and a different aroma waiting on each street corner. A true Moroccan market!

Next stop, camels! After the market, we travel to find ourselves camel rides. With most of us having never rode or seen any camels before, this was by far the coolest part of the trip. They were massive, very lanky and although a bit grumpy at times, they seemed to smile for all the right photos, and a lot of camel selfies were achieved. All in all, Morocco lived up to its name on day 1!

DAY 2

Day 2 was a bright and early start so we could fit everything in for our last and final day in Morocco. Leaving the best till last, a trip to Chefchaouen was where we spent our day. This is an old town, home to a strict blue and white colour scheme! Blue and white-washed buildings surround the town, making it truly beautiful and magical. Every street is a photo-opportunity, with all its different blue-shaped doors that come in all shapes and sizes, intricate details on the houses and one wall in particular covered in handprints, each stamped in a different colour on a plain white wall. A dainty little town with a lot of atmosphere!

Overall, Morocco was a big success with all the students! Everyone came back to Seville exhausted but happy, carrying back a lot of colourful Aladin-like Moroccan trousers.
