Spanish-American
Institute of International
Education (SAIIE)

The Spanish-American Institute of International Education (SAIIE) was founded in Seville, Spain, in 1984 by Dr. William Spofford, former Study Abroad Director at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, and Robert Chipres, former Director of SAIIE. Since its founding, more than 10,000 students from across the United States have come to Seville to participate in our study abroad programs.

SAIIE offers academically rigorous and culturally immersive programs for undergraduate students, gap year students, and faculty from institutions throughout the United States.

Our programs are designed to provide a personalized intercultural learning experience within a fully integrated Spanish-speaking environment. We are committed to fostering academic excellence, cultural immersion, and meaningful social integration. This is achieved not only through high-quality coursework, but also through a wide range of experiential learning opportunities, including field studies, cultural and social activities with local communities, volunteer placements, internships, athletic programs with local teams, and homestay accommodation with Spanish host families.

After 40 successful years hosting the study abroad program in Seville for the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, July 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter in SAIIE’s history with the establishment of a partnership with the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, which now serves as our school of record.
