Summer Term

SPANISH 1010 Beginning Spanish I (4 Credits)

This course is designed for stduents with no previous knowledge of Spanish. It covers grammar, composition, conversation, and beginning reading. Emphasis is placed on oral practice both inside and outside the classroom.

Prerequisite: 0-1 years of high-school Spanish.  

SPANISH 2040 Intensive 2nd year Spanish Composition and Conversation I (4 Credits)

Students in this course are capable of understanding the main topics in texts and in spoken Spanish if they have knowledge on the topic of the conversation- whether it´s work-related, school-related or socially related.

Students will know how to handle most situations where Spanish will be used. Students will be able to write simple and coherent texts on topics that are familiar to them or of personal interest. Students will be able to describe experiences, events, wishes and ambitions as well as explaining their opinions and plans.

Prerequisite: 4 years of high-school Spanish or 3 semesters of college-level Spanish.

SPANISH 3060 Intensive Third Year Composition and Conversation II (4 Credits)
Offered only in session 1

Following Spanish 3050, the course covers the basic structures of the Spanish language to enable the student to have a comprehensive understanding of all Spanish constructions and thus proceed to a more advanced level.

The objective of the course is that the student: is able to understand the main ideas of informational texts and texts of a certain complexity that require exposure to and general knowledge of Spanish culture / can provide detailed information on general topics / can write texts of certain length and grammatical complexity / can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and to participate in social exchanges of certain formality.

Prerequisite: 5 semesters of college-level Spanish, including one course in composition and conversation.

SPANISH 4060 Intensive Fourth Year Composition and Conversation (4 credits)
Offered only in session 2

It is a summer course, the aim in such a short time, is to improve the student´s communication skills and grammar and knowledge about Spanish culture. The objective is that the student is able to understand various types of complex writing/ is able to express themselves with fluency and spontaneity and adapt their style of language effectively during different situations/ is able to write clear and well structured texts / participate actively in any conversation and that understands their socio-cultural surroundings.

Prerequisite: 6 semesters of college level Spanish, including two courses in Composition and Conversation.

SOC 3650 Gastronomy of Spain (3 credits)

Taught in English, the aim of this course is to understand how different civilizations that have settled in Spain throughout the centuries have influenced the history of Spanish food. The participants will study the variety of styles of cooking depending on the geographical location.The course includes a study of some prominent chefs and restaurants in the history of Spanish cuisine such as Ferrán Adriá, José Andrés, Juan Mari Arzak and also some practical activities outside the classroom (visits to food markets, wine tasting…).

HISTORY 3370 Twentieth Century Spanish History (3 Credits)

Taught in Spanish, this course will examine the main themes in 20th-century Spanish history, including the Spirit of ‘98; Spain and World War I; the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera; the Second Republic; the Civil War; the new order under Franco; Spain’s international isolation; the transition through King Juan Carlos I and the arrival of democracy; and the latest developments under a socialist government.

Prerequisite: 5 semesters of college-level Spanish.

HISTORY 2010 Colloquium on Spanish Culture (3 Credits)

Taught in English, this course is designed to insure an awareness of Seville's cultural heritage and its many contemporary manifestations. Students will do a series of written assignments based on lectures and research related to the cultural visits. The schedule for the visits usually includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Winterim Term

All students participating in the winterim program will take the following 3 credit course taught in English:

ART 3700 Artistic Monuments of Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada (3 Credits)

This course is designed to improve the student´s knowledge of the historical, artistics, social and religious aspects of Seville, Córdoba and Granada. The city itself is used as the main classroom or textbook for this course, been that the students will visit different places everyday that have made these cities so important in Spanish history and in Art. The students will also be able to appreciate the cultural and architectural impact of diverse cultures that have been imposed in Andalucía for centuries.
