La Residencia San Juan de Dios is a private catholic care home for the elderly, focused on the well-being of its residents. It is located no more then a 5 minute walk from the SAIIE center.

What will my role be in the home?
Providing the residents with companionship, for example; playing bingo, going for walks, having a chat. A lot of the residents do not have family visiting them so these visits can really help them.

This role does require a minimun level of intermediate Spanish as you will need to talk to the residents.

Are there any prerequisites skills needed?
No specific skills required. However students must be helpful and friendly in the residency.

Can I receive academic credit for the experience?
At the moment, academic credit is not available through the SAIIE nor the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, we hope to have credit-bearing experience available in the near future. However this will be valuable and rewarding experience which you can add to your resume. If you would like to receive credit for this activity you must talk to your University and see what our their requirements.

What is the typical time commitment for each opportunity?
This depends on the student and their schedule but most students volunteer a minimum of two days per week for a couple hours each day.
