Sevillanas

This program is designed for students that have a basic level or lower intermediate level of Spanish, so there are no language prerequisites required. The program has been put together to offer American students their first experience with Spanish culture and its historical, social and economic context.

That is why SAIIE has teamed together with the faculties of Geography, History and Language Study at the University of Seville, to offer students a wide range of classes that include the following materials, amongst others:

  • Basic and Intermediate level Spanish courses

  • Business courses (European Union, Marketing…)

  • Spanish culture courses (Spanish civilisation and culture, flamenco, gastronomy…)

  • History courses related to Spain, Europe and the Islamic world.

  • Art courses (history of art, cinema, painting, photography…)

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Each student will have to study between a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 18 per semester. Each class consists of 45 class hours, worth 3 credits.

Exceptionally, the following Spanish classes: SPAN 1010, SPAN 1020, SPAN 2030 and SPAN 2040, are worth 4 credits. This is because an intercambio (exchange) activity is included within these classes, which means work outside of the classroom, which is estimated to be an approximate 15 hours, in which the student must prepare reports under the teacher’s supervision.

All the classes on this program are taught in English (except the following Spanish classes: SPAN 1010, SPAN 1020, SPAN 2030 and SPAN 2040), as they do not require previous knowledge of the language. The requirements for the Spanish classes can be found in the course list.

Classes are taught from Monday to Thursday, usually on alternating days (Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday) and 2 hours per session.

It is mandatory that every student takes the ART 3900 class (Artistic Monuments of Seville), one of the classes taught in Spanish of their own choice, and then any from the rest of those included in the International Studies and Contemporary Hispanic Studies course.

Please note: Classes will be taught at two centres; the SAIIE facilities and the University of Seville’s main building. Both centres are located in the historical centre of Seville, approximately 15 minutes away.
